Nēnē Research & Conservation

Banded nene in Hawaiʻi are usually marked with two bands, including a larger Auxiliary Marker, or AUX band, which displays a unique three-character code for identifying individual birds. We’ve developed this tool to enable the community to search for nene they encounter and learn about each bird’s distinctive traits and history.

By tracking this data, we can better understand their preferred habitats, social interactions, and movement patterns across different parts of the island. Your participation in community science is vital. Please send us photos of banded nene you encounter, contributing to our understanding and conservation efforts.
